Harvey joined the Royal Fusiliers and sailed from Southampton in September 1914 by way of Malta and then the Ypres Salient.

He provides a clever, often light-hearted view of trench warfare illustrated by fine drawings. He was gassed in the first German gas attack in April 1915 and invalided home.
