'ON ACTIVE SERVICE' - Letters of Geoffrey Blemell Pollard - A rare series of printed letters of a gunner involved in the earliest actions of the war. Pollard's Brigade was sent to France in August 1914 and by the 23rd they were in action south west of Mons.

They then took part in fierce battle against three German batteries during which Captain Francis Grenfell of the 9th Lancers was awarded the first V.C. of the War for his part in saving the guns of the 199th.

After action at Le Cateau they retreated to the south of Paris and remained there during the battle of the Aisne. In October 1914 they were moved to Bethune and it was here that Geoffrey was killed by a shell while observing the fire of his own Battery from the front line trench.
