by Broome Lynne.
The second of the Williamson novels begins with the
Christmas Truce of 1914 and is based on Williamson’s own
experiences of fraternizing with the Germans on the front
line. After a period of sick leave Phillip Maddison is
commissioned into the Gaultshires (the Bedford Regiment)
and in September 1915, takes part in the Battle of Loos as
a gas officer.

In his third novel of the wartime saga Phillip Maddison
transfers to the Middlesex Regiment and after a period of
leave is sent up to the Somme - this is a good description
of the build up to the great push, and he is wounded on
the 1st July, 1916 and sent home to hospital.
