Fine personal account of the Somme between August 1916 and January 1917 - regarded as one of the best accounts of the Somme battle of this period. The author joined the R.A.M.C. but once at the front he was commissioned into the 10th West Yorks regiment - as a result of his experiences here he subsequently resigned his commission and became a complete pacifist.

354. POLLARD, GEOFFREY BLEMELL. ON ACTIVE SERVICE. LETTERS OF GEOFFREY BLEMELL POLLARD. 119TH BATTERY, R.F.A. Privately printed for Friends, 1915.

88 pp. with frontis photogravure portrait. Orig. cloth, gilt. 

Rare series of printed letters of a gunner involved in the earliest actions of the war. Pollard's Brigade was sent to France in August 1914 and by the 23rd they were in action south west of Mons. They then took part in a fierce battle against three German batteries during which Captain Francis Grenfell of the 9th Lancers was awarded the first V.C. of the War for his part in saving the guns of the 119th. After action at Le Cateau they retreated to the south of Paris and remained here during the Battle of the Aisne. In October 1914 they were moved to Bethune and it was here that Geoffrey was killed by a shell whilst observing the fire of his own Battery from the front line trench.

Should hostile aircraft be seen, take shelter immediately in the nearest house, preferably in the basement...and do not touch unexploded bombs. London, H.M.S.O., 1915.

32 x 23 ins. A fine example. 

Below the lettering are two sections of black silhouettes of German and British airships, and then two sections of German and British aircraft. Extremely rare recognition poster widely displayed in London, and other cities.
