The book is remarkable in two counts, firstly that Greenwell was able to write so freely about the horrors of war to his mother and secondly his outlook on the war - "For my own part I have to confess that I look back on the years 1914 - 1918 as among the happiest I have ever spent".

"This is an exciting record of a prisoner of war whom no prison could hold" - Cyril Falls.

The author was captured in 1915 and confined to various camps. He escaped from Freiburg by coolly walking out of the main gate wearing a Germanj officer’s great-coat, but was recaptured.In 1917 he escaped from Zorndorff but was again caught. Finally he escaped from Aix-la Chapelle and got over the frontier. He returned to serve as a flying officer for the rest of the war.
