FIELD MESSAGE BOOKS (FOR
THE USE OF DISMOUNTED REGIMENTAL OFFICERS AND
NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS OF CAVALRY AND INFANTRY)
BELONGING TO LT. DAY "D" COMPANY 17TH BATTALION
HAMPSHIRE REGIMENT. 1918.
2 Field Message Books - each 7 x 5ins. comprising pages
of squared paper to tear off and use for messages.
Original brown canvas covers with pencil holders.
Field Message books belonging to Lt. P.W. Day,
"D" Company, 17th Battalion Hampshire Regiment.
The first book has a nominal roll of Day's company in his
own hand - the remainder is blank. The second book
contains his hand written notes on Bayonet Fighting and
other notes probably made on a course, the book continues
with many notes made in his day to day life in the
trenches made in the later months of 1917 and through to
March 1918. This includes the diary of "Right Sub
Sector Centre Company (Southwold) Sector 17th Batt. Hants
Regt." which notes times and actions "11.25
Heavy Gunfire North of SOUTHWOLD", sketches of
trenches, and other relevant notes. Both books contain
their original carbon paper and are in fine condition.
Although many of the entries are of a sketchy nature these
are a unique record - much of this type of material would
have been discarded on the front itself or destroyed
deliberately at the time. |
